Diesel Engines Under Fire In London 05/02/2008 The new Low Emission zone in London has been hailed as one of the biggest urban environmental control programs in the world. Diesel engines are often praised as producing lower levels of carbon emissions than their petrol counterparts, and therefore have proved popular among green-minded motorists. Additionally, the appeal of diesel engines as being more environmentally friendly, is, depending on the size and output of the diesel engine, it may be cheaper with regards to taxes and charges which are higher on vehicles which emit higher levels of carbon. The Low Emission zone of London places restrictions on Lorries which weigh more than 12 tonnes and have diesel engines, entering the capital. The restrictions are to be enforced by automatic number plate reading cameras which check the registration plates of Lorries with diesel engines against a database held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. The DVLA database holds information regarding the type of engine the vehicle contains, for example, a diesel engine. Lorries with diesel engines which are not owned by British firms or independent owners are required to have registered with the Transport for London group before entering the capital so as to avoid a fine. Lorries weighing over 12 tonnes and containing diesel engines must meet stringent European regulations on carbon emissions, and Lorries with diesel engines which do not meet the standard will be subject to a £200 per day charge to enter the capital. Drivers and owners of Lorries with diesel engines who do not meet the standard and fail to pay the charge will be subject to a penalty of £1,000. The Low Emission zone looks set to extend in the year 2010, when vehicles with diesel engines of smaller capacities will also be subject to the regulations. |
