Diesel Engine Cars Popular In Curbing Emissions 05/02/2008

An increased awareness of carbon emissions and their effect on the environment has caused many motorists to seek cars which are have decreased carbon emissions, such as diesel engines and hybrid cars. Hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius combine a petrol engine with an electric motor. Despite the emergence of such hybrid vehicles, cars and other vehicles with diesel engines have proved to be consistently popular, with the majority of low emission cars sold in 2007 having diesel engines.

It has been argued that the best conventional car in relation to levels of pollution was the Volkswagen Polo Blue Motion with a diesel engine. The Volkswagen Polo Blue Motion with a diesel engine was introduced in 2007.

The British Government has suggested that to encourage car buyers to purchase and use cars which are kinder to the environment, such as those with hybrid or diesel engines, extra charges and taxes will be placed on those vehicles which emit a high level of carbon. This will see a change in car taxes, as well as charges relating to cars which do not have diesel engines. Consequently it seems, people who would suffer as a result of higher taxes on cars with higher carbon emissions would be increasingly likely to switch to more environmentally friendly cars, such as those with hybrid or diesel engines, a study for the Department of Transport has found. It can be claimed that this has been reflected by industry figures published by The Times, which found that sales of low-emission cars, such as those with diesel engines, have increased by around 17 per cent, potentially demonstrating the appeal of the benefit of lower road tax.
