Diesel Engine

Diesel engines are internal combustion engines that use the heat of compression to initiate ignition to burn the fuel, which is injected into the combustion chamber during the final stage of compression. By comparison a petrol engine uses spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture. The engine and thermodynamic Diesel cycle were both developed by Rudolf Diesel in 1897. Diesel engines have been used in everything from generators to submarines.

Typically, a diesel engine will burn less fuel than a petrol engine performing the same work, due to the engine's higher temperature of combustion and greater expansion ratio. Used diesel engines

An alternator and electric motor is used in diesel-electric vessels. The reciprocating marine diesel engine was first used in 1903 on the river tanker Vandal, put into service by Branobel. Most modern larger merchant ships use either a slow speed, two stroke, crosshead engine, or medium speed, four stroke, trunk engines. Some smaller vessels may use high speed diesel engines.
